Precautionary Perspective on Marcellus Shale

Presented by Patricia M. DeMarco, Ph.D.
When:    Saturday, May 19, 2012, 1:00 pm

Where:   Butler Public Library, 218 N. McKean St., Butler PA 16001

Finding it difficult to counter the feel good advertising done by the gas industry that portrays natural gas as the answer to our energy needs and our energy future? Frustrated that other people appear unconcerned about all the negative impacts of unconventional gas drilling? Patricia M. DeMarco, Ph.D., Director, Rachel Carson Institute School of Sustainability and the Environment, who has testified before the Department of Energy and spoken around the country, will share with us what people may need to consider to be more effective in talking about the damaging aspects of drilling in the Marcellus and Utica Shales. Just to be against something is not as powerful as being for something. Beginning with Rachel Carson’s environmental ethic, Dr. DeMarco will talk about how we got to where we are today with extraction of gas and oil and what real energy options we have for the future. By increasing our understanding of ways to frame and have these conversations about current, toxic, energy practices and our energy future, we can enlist others to work for a sustainable energy future.
