On October 8, The Slippery Rock Community Farmers’ Market will be holding the 1st annual Harvest Picnic from dusk til dawn.  Todd has offered the opportunity for SSR to set up an info booth at the event.  It’s free and fun for all ages.  There will be a potluck lunch, live music and kids activities.

Also, there are some funds leftover from our Marcellus Shale Symposium in April.  Ted Kneupper has info on that and we will have to discuss whether we should open a bank account and who would be in charge of that an what we can use those funds for.

At this meeting, we will plan out the meetings for the rest of the year and brainstorm ideas as to what speakers and information we can present at future meetings.  We will also discuss future organization of SSR. Any input would be great.

Hope to see you all on Friday!

FRESH – A documentary film at SRU August 30

AmeriCorps and Community Service at Slippery Rock University is teaming up with the Macoskey Center and AVI Dining Services to show the movie FRESH, a documentary.  www.freshthemovie.com

NEWS RELEASE

CSIL, Macoskey Center and AVI Partner to Show the Award Winning Movie Fresh During WOW Weeks Activities

Building on the sustainability and green programming already at SRU, the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, the Macoskey Center and AVI will co-host the showing of the film FRESH on Tuesday, August 30 at 8:30 P.M. at the front patio of the University Union. (Bring your lawn chairs.)

FRESH, a film by ana Sofia joanes, “is more than a movie, it’s a gateway to action.  It is a reflection of a rising movement of people and communities who are re-inventing our food system.  FRESH is a guide that empowers people to take an array of actions as energetic as planting urban gardens and creating warm composts from food waste, and as simple as buying locally-grown products and preserving seasonal produce to eat later in the year.” FRESH was an Official Selection of the 2009 Environmental Film Festival, the 2009 Sustainable Living Film Festival, 2009 Newport Beach Film Festival, 2009 Maine International Film Festival and the 2009 Kerry Film Festival.

In addition to the film, the audience will be entertained with live music from Butler natives,

Stephanie Frazen and Todd Heinsburg beginning at 7:30pm.  AVI, SRU campus food vendor, will offer apples, cider and organic popcorn to further set the mood of the film.

Earlier in the day, the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research will host the Travelling Gypsy Chickens in the Quad.   In additional to its sponsorship of environmental films, the Macoskey Center educates about sustainability through a number of events, workshops and programs each year.  For additional information on its programming, please visit www.sru.edu/ramc.

“The CSIL is very excited about its partnership with the Macoskey Center and AVI to better educate our students and the surrounding communities on how to eat healthy on a budget, and improve their purchasing decisions. This is about real people, just like those living in our Slippery Rock area communities, taking action to make a difference,” stated Laurel Dagnon, CSIL Program Director.

The Center for Student Involvement and Leadership, division of Student Life at SRU, creates valuable developmental and educational opportunities through activities, programs, student organizations, community service, and leadership training.  For additional information on either the CSIL or the film FRESH, please contact Justin Dandoy at 724-738-2273.

April 2011 – Earth Day Marcellus Shale Symposium

Earth Day – Weekend Events

We are planning to celebrate Earth Day with a Marcellus Shale Symposium on Friday (April 21, 2011) and an Earth Day Picnic on Saturday (April 22, 2011). Please also see our Events page for a complete copy of the symposium program and additional information about ongoing events and news.

Events: February – March 2011

As Spring arrives and our thoughts turn to the outdoors, here is an evolving list of upcoming local events. Please also see the previous post below for additional information about ongoing events and news.

Daylight hours are increasing and spring is “just around the corner,” according to one furry forecaster.  If you’ve been eagerly looking through the seed catalogs that have come in the mail or are just beginning to think about spring planting, here’s an opportunity co-sponsored by Northwest Pennsylvania Growers’ Co-operative and GHUUC:

The Open Pollinated Seed Advantage
6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, 2011

at Ginger Hill Unitarian Universalist Congregation’s building in Slippery Rock (174 South Main Street, located just behind the first row of businesses near the public parking lot.)

Join local farmers, gardeners, and community members at this informative session and seed-exchange event. Octavia Elder, manager for Northwest Pennsylvania Growers’ Co-operative, willl explain benefits of saving and planting open-pollinated seeds and heirloom varieties, as well as some of the issues associated with genetically modified (GMO) seeds and plants.  Participants are encouraged to bring seeds that they have saved for exchanging with others after the presentation.  Some seeds may also be available for sale to those who don’t have seeds to trade.  This program is free and open to the public, and will last approximately two hours.
For more information, contact Octavia at octaviasbeads@yahoo.com or 724-712-3863.
