Heavy rains today (Saturday, September 21st) dampened the plans for “Harvest for the Hungry” and the “Harvest Picnic” at the Slippery Rock Community Farmers Market at Rock Falls Park. Thus, donations will be welcomed again next Saturday during market hours (9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon) for “Harvest for the Hungry,” a hunger-relief effort sponsored by the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA)/Western PA Buy Fresh Buy Local, in conjunction with their celebration of Local Food Month in September. This event “gives farmers market customers an opportunity to support their local farmers while giving back to families in need.” At our local event on the 28th, market visitors can purchase extra produce from vendors or bring non-perishable items from home, and drop these off with volunteers at the market, who will donate them to Slippery Rock’s “Feed My Sheep” food pantry.
On Sunday, September 29th, the rescheduled “Harvest Picnic”, also at Rock Falls Park, invites vendors, patrons and market friends to celebrate another great market season from noon until ? A potluck picnic will be served at 1:00 p.m. There will be live music, vendors, kids’ activities and more. Bring a dish to share and your own place setting and utensils. Locally-sourced hamburgers and hot dogs will be available for a small donation.
