“This Changes Everything” Film Screening in Butler

Marcellus Outreach Butler will host a screening of This Changes Everything, on Saturday, January 23, 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the Butler Public Library, 218 North McKean Street, Butler. The event is free and open to all. Based on Naomi Klein’s book, This Changes
Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate
, the film presents stories of seven communities, interwoven with Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there.   (See additional details about the film in the November 3rd post below.)

Marcellus Outreach Butler Presentation: Shale Gas Infrastructure and Community Organizing

On Saturday, December 1st Marcellus Outreach Butler will host a presentation by Alex Lotorto of the Energy Justice Network. The presentation is scheduled from 1:00 until 3:00 PM at the Butler Public Library (218 Noshaleshock image resizedrth McKean Street). It is free and open to the public.

Mr. Lotorto will review the natural gas midstream from wellhead to end use, explaining cryogenic processing plants, pipelines and compressor stations and the potential impacts of each of these. He’ll also discuss how various strategies and tactics implemented through community organizing have been used across the state to influence decision making by gas companies. Duquesne University Hosts Presidential Conference on the Integrity of Creation: Climate Change

Integrity of Creation Web Banner FINAL 2015Wednesday-Friday, September 30-October 2, Duquesne University in Pittsburgh will host its first “Presidential Conference on the Integrity of Creation,” with climate change being the topic of discussion.  According to the university, “This interdisciplinary, academic conference will occur each year to provide a scholarly forum for exploring a topic related to the general theme of the Integrity of Creation.”

The conference has three goals:  1. To provide a scholarly opportunity to engage established and emerging research on the conference topic; 2. To foster interdisciplinary discourse on each topic, such as among science, health, philosophy, religion and policy; and 3. To enlighten public awareness and discussion of the conference topic.

Speakers will include Richard Alley (Evan Pugh Professor of Environmental Science, Penn State University, and Nobel Laureate); Robert Brinkmann (Director of Sustainability Research at the National Center for Suburban Studies); Mary Wood (Phillip Knight Professor of Law, University of Oregon); and Laurie Zoloth (Professor of Religious Studies, Bioethics and Medical Humanities, Northwestern University).

Slow Foods events begin for fall semester at Slippery Rock University

It’s back to school time, and time again to begin the series of campus/community Slow Food dinners. Generally scheduled on the last Thursday of the month, the first will be held this week, Thursday, August 27th, 6:00 – 8:30 PM. The event will take place at the Sustainable Enterprise Accelerator (SEA), 165 Elm St., Slippery Rock, located next to the public parking lot across from the SR Fire Department. Students and community members are welcome to attend.
Participants are asked to bring a theme-related dish to share, that represents and celebrates sustainably, locally and ethically grown, seasonal, fresh or home-prepared, rather than processed, foods. Also, in order to reduce the waste of disposables and model sustainable practices, please bring your own (reusable) place setting, including plate, bowl, utensils, and cup or mug.

Slippery Rock Market Celebrates National Farmers Market Week

US Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has declared the week of August 2-8 “National Farmers Market Week.” According to Secretary Vilsack, “Farmers markets play a key role in developing local and regional food systems that support farmers and help grow rural economies. They bring communities together, connecting cities with the farms and proMay 16 2015viding Americans with fresh, healthy food.”

Slippery Rock Community Farmers’ Market invites consumers to visit on Saturday, August 8th during this commemorative week, as well as every Saturday (9:00 AM until 12:00 noon) through the end of October at Rock Falls Park (on Route 173 just south of Slippery Rock).

Locally-grown tomatoes and peppers are appearing at the market now, as well as summer squash, cucumbers, beans, greens, potatoes, onions, and garlic. Local, grass-finished beef for grilling, eggs, baked goods, preserved foods and unique, hand-crafted items also are available. Get to know growers and crafters to see (and even sample) all that they have to offer.

In addition to items for sale, the market schedules live music, activities for children, and informative displays related to food, gardening, health and sustainable living. On Saturday, August 8, Debbie Sale, of Jennings Environmental Education Center, will offer information and activities suitable for all ages related to the importance of bees. The display will include a live honeybee observation hive!

Macoskey Center/Kaleidoscope Earth Day Celebration Saturday, April 25th

Celebrate Earth Day  on Saturday, April 25th from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM with the Kaleidoscope Arts Festival and the Robert A. Macoskey Center for Sustainable Systems Education and Research at Slippery Rock University. This year’s family-oriented celebration includes arts and crafts, games and activities for people of all ages. Enjoy youth & community performances, as well as musicians of “Rock Falls Park,” while viewing earth-friendly and interactive displays and demonstrations offered by local organizations and sustainable vendors. Slippery Rock Community Farmers’ Market Seeks New Vendors

Slippery Rock Community Farmers’ Market is gearing up for the 2015 market season with a planning and organizational meeting on Friday, April 10 at 6:30 PM at the Slippery Rock Alliance Church, 530 Kiester Road, Slippery Rock. All current vendors and market supporters are encouraged to attend, in order to provide input and ideas to the market management committee and hear about upcoming developments. New and prospective vendors are especially invited to come learn about plans for this year’s market. The market will open on May 2 and run until the end of October, on Saturday morinings, 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon at Rock Falls Park.

March 26th Slow Food at SRU

MarchSlowFoodFler (3)The Slow Food chapter of Slippery Rock University will hold its next event on Thursday, March 26th at 6:00 PM at the Sustainable Enterprise Accelerator at 165 Elm Street in Slippery Rock. Students and community members are all welcome to attend.

Foods for this month’s dinner will feature “coffee as an ingredient.”  Bring a dish to share, made from a recipe that includes coffee as more than just a beverage.  In order to reduce disposables and model sustainable practices, attendees are asked to bring their own (reusable) place setting, including plate, bowl, eating utensils and cup or mug.

During the dinner, Tim Gebhart, who works at a sustainable farming operation, will offer information about growing fruit trees.
